Ansaru Commanders Sentenced to Life for Terrorism

On Monday, the Federal High Court in Abuja sentenced two commanders of the Ansaru terrorist group, Mahmud Usman and Abubakar Abba, to life imprisonment for terrorism-related offenses. The duo pleaded guilty to 32 counts, which included charges of terrorism, terrorism financing, kidnapping for ransom, and illegal mining to fund terrorist activities.

Justice Emeka Nwite presided over the case, admitting the defendants' guilt on counts 30 and 31, while imposing a 20-year prison term on the remaining counts. The charges stemmed from their involvement in coordinating a sleeper cell that carried out attacks and maintained links with terrorist groups across the Sahel and Maghreb regions.

Usman had previously pleaded guilty to illegal mining for financing terrorism and procuring arms, resulting in a 15-year sentence for that count. Abba initially pleaded not guilty to all counts but later expressed a willingness to change his plea, ultimately admitting guilt.
