DSS to Appeal Life Sentences of Ansaru Terror Commanders

The Department of State Services (DSS) is set to appeal the life sentences handed down to two top commanders of the Ansaru terror organization, Mahmud Usman and Abu Bara Abba Mukhtar. The sentencing occurred at the Federal High Court in Abuja, presided over by Justice Emeka Nwite.

Both men pleaded guilty to 32 counts, including the murder of two teachers in Oyo State. However, DSS officials consider the life sentences too lenient given the severity of the crimes committed.

The court found it curious that the convicts initially pleaded guilty but later changed their minds. The Ansaru command was involved in the kidnapping of pupils and teachers, resulting in nearly 60 deaths.

The DSS is concerned that allowing the two commanders to walk free would undermine justice for the families of the victims, who were beheaded under pressure from the terrorists.
