Ansaru Commanders Sentenced to Life for Terrorism

On Monday, Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja sentenced two senior members of the Ansaru terrorist group, Abubakar Abba, also known as Abu Bara, and Mahmud Usman, known as Isah Adam Mahmud, to life imprisonment after they pleaded guilty to multiple terrorism-related offenses. The court convicted them on 32 counts of terrorism charges filed by the Department of State Services (DSS) on behalf of the federal government.

The charges included terrorism financing, kidnapping, and illegal mining. Justice Nwite described the outcome as a significant step in the fight against terrorism in Nigeria.

Abba and Usman were arrested during separate security operations carried out by the DSS in July 2025, following intelligence on their terrorist activities. In addition to the life sentences, the court imposed a 20-year prison term for remaining counts against them.

The trial concluded a major terrorism prosecution in Nigeria, addressing serious threats to national security.
