Gates Foundation's E-MOTIVE Tackles Nigeria's Maternal Deaths

Nigeria faces a severe maternal mortality crisis, with an estimated 1,047 deaths per 100,000 live births, accounting for about 28-29% of global maternal deaths. The E-MOTIVE initiative, funded by the Gates Foundation, is addressing this issue by focusing on postpartum hemorrhage (PPH), the leading cause of maternal deaths, responsible for 27% of such fatalities worldwide.

E-MOTIVE introduces a low-cost calibrated plastic drape to measure blood loss accurately and a rapid treatment protocol that includes uterine massage, oxytocic drugs, tranexamic acid, and IV fluids. This protocol emphasizes early detection, which is crucial in preventing PPH-related deaths.

The initiative has shown measurable declines in maternal deaths in regions where it has been implemented, particularly in Kano State. With only 43% of Nigerian births attended by skilled providers and 59% occurring at home, E-MOTIVE represents a significant step towards improving maternal healthcare and reducing preventable deaths in Nigeria.
