Jhpiego Partners with Ondo to Reduce Maternal Mortality

Jhpiego, a global non-governmental organization, has partnered with the Ondo State government to tackle maternal mortality, particularly focusing on postpartum hemorrhage, which is a leading cause of maternal death in low-income countries. Dr.

Allyson Bear, Chief Executive Officer of Jhpiego, emphasized the organization's commitment to promoting maternal survival across Africa through innovative interventions. The project, which began in 2014, has demonstrated successful collaboration with state and national governments to enhance healthcare delivery and advance maternal health.

Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa highlighted the importance of this partnership, describing Jhpiego as a valuable ally in addressing postpartum hemorrhage. The state government is dedicated to improving maternal health, which includes strengthening the health insurance scheme and ensuring that financial constraints do not prevent access to healthcare services.

The initiative also involves renovating health facilities and recruiting healthcare workers to bridge gaps in the healthcare system. According to the World Health Organization, postpartum hemorrhage accounts for approximately 70,000 maternal deaths annually.
