Senate's E-Transmission Remarks Threaten Nigeria's Democracy

Daudu Jefferi, the newly elected president of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) Students' Congress, condemned the Nigerian Senate's comments regarding the electronic transmission of election results, stating that such remarks undermine Nigeria's democracy. He referenced Adeniyi Adegbonmir, the chairman of the Senate ad hoc committee reviewing the 2026 electoral bill, who asserted that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) currently lacks the capacity to conduct electronic voting.

Adegbonmir's statement raised concerns about Nigeria's commitment to democratic reforms, especially in an era where technology drives transparency and accountability. Jefferi argued that the Senate's stance reflects either a lack of political will or an unwillingness to embrace electoral integrity.

He highlighted the need for significant financial investment in the electoral system to ensure credible elections. Additionally, he congratulated the newly inaugurated Vice Chancellor of NOUN, Prof. Uduma Oji Uduma, urging prioritization of academic administration to address student challenges and improve educational processes.
