UN Warns Ebola Outbreak in DRC Outpaces Response Efforts

The United Nations has issued a warning regarding the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), stating that the global response must urgently outpace the virus as deaths approach 3,000. UN Emergency Relief Coordinator Tom Fletcher reported that the outbreak is expanding faster than containment efforts, despite increased humanitarian agency involvement and efforts by Congolese authorities.

As of Monday, DRC authorities reported over 6,100 confirmed cases and 2,950 deaths, with more than 5,000 infections in Ituri Province alone. The outbreak, declared on May 15, is spreading at a rate surpassing the 2014-2016 West Africa Ebola epidemic.

Fletcher emphasized the need for sustained political commitment, unrestricted humanitarian access, and increased international financing, highlighting a funding shortfall of approximately $1.1 billion. The UN has allocated over $57 million from the Central Emergency Response Fund for response efforts.

The World Health Organisation recently declared Uganda's Ebola outbreak over, showcasing the potential for effective containment.
