Ebola Survivors Educate Students Amid Ongoing Outbreak

In DR Congo, survivors of the Ebola virus are actively engaging with students to raise awareness about the ongoing outbreak, which has claimed nearly lives among over confirmed cases. Gisèle Nziavake participated in these sensitization efforts, while Rebecca Kahindo Kaputu, a teacher at Mapambazuko Elementary School, highlighted the numerous challenges faced in combating the outbreak.

The Ebola outbreak is currently spreading across six provinces in eastern Congo, exacerbated by rebel violence, population displacement, and significant movements of people. The healthcare and surveillance systems are weak, complicating response efforts, which are further hindered by insufficient contact tracing and laboratory testing.

There is no approved vaccine or treatment for the Bundibugyo virus responsible for the outbreak. However, authorities have begun vaccinating front-line health workers with the Evrebo vaccine, which the World Health Organisation suggests may provide some protection against Ebola, although its efficacy against the current virus remains inconclusive.

Health authorities estimate that the actual scale of the crisis may be three times greater than reported statistics, with projections indicating it could surpass the deadliest outbreak in history, the West Africa outbreak from 2014-2016.
