Ebola Vaccine Trial Launches Amid Rising Death Toll

The first participant in a Phase 1 clinical trial for the ChAdOx1 BDBV Ebola vaccine was vaccinated in Oxford. This trial, involving 50 healthy adults, aims to assess the vaccine's safety and immune response.

The World Health Organisation reports that the current Ebola outbreak, which began in May, has infected nearly 3,000 individuals and claimed over 1,270 lives across the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Uganda. The ChAdOx1 BDBV vaccine, developed by Oxford University’s Pandemic Sciences Institute, utilizes the same platform as the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine.

David Pulido-Gomez from the institute described the vaccine's development as a significant scientific milestone, achieved within eight weeks through global collaboration. The trial is funded by the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), with the Serum Institute of India producing a stockpile of 620,000 vaccine doses for potential future deployment.

The outbreak is the 17th recorded in the DRC and remains concentrated in the northeastern region, with WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warning of challenges in response efforts due to insecurity and limited access to affected communities.
