Ebonyi Assembly Approves New Pay for Local Officials

The Ebonyi State House of Assembly passed a bill on September 23, 2026, aimed at amending Schedules A and C of Law No. 004 of 2008, which governs the remuneration of public and political office holders at the local government and development centre levels. The bill was presented during a plenary session at the Legislative Complex in Abakaliki, presided over by Speaker Rt.

Hon. Moses Ije Odunwa. Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru's letter was presented, emphasizing the need for the amendment to enhance the welfare of grassroots political office holders.

The Leader of the House, Rt. Hon. Kingsley Ikoro, noted that the State House of Assembly is empowered by Section 7 of the 1999 Constitution to legislate on local government matters.

After deliberations, the Assembly moved into a Committee of the Whole to refine the bill's provisions. The revised remuneration was announced by Speaker Odunwa, and the bill was passed unanimously through a voice vote.

The Clerk of the House, Mrs. Eden Uche Blessing, was directed to communicate the passage to the governor.
