Crisis at Federal College of Agriculture Over Provost Appointments

A significant crisis is unfolding at the Federal College of Agriculture in Ishiagu, Ebonyi State, following the emergence of two provosts: Dr. Jonah Nwawuisi, appointed as acting provost last year, and Professor Agwu Ekw, appointed as substantive provost in October.

The Joint Union Action and the Academic Staff Union of Colleges of Agriculture have rejected Ekw's appointment, claiming it was made without following due process, as no qualified candidates were invited for interviews. The situation escalated on April 10, 2026, when the Federal Government locked the school gates in response to protests.

Dr. Thankgod Nwaneri, chairman of the Joint Union Action, emphasized that the appointments are illegitimate and called for the immediate withdrawal of Ekw's appointment.

The unions demand a transparent selection process for the provost positions across seven colleges within 14 days, threatening to resume previous strikes if their demands are not met. The crisis raises serious concerns about fair administration and adherence to established procedures.
