Sonni Echono Receives Doctorate for Education Contributions

Sonni Echono, the Executive Secretary of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), has been acknowledged for his significant contributions to Nigeria's education sector. On July 18, 2025, he was awarded a Doctor of Public Governance Leadership degree from Yakubu Gowon University during a ceremony in Abuja.

Echono's academic journey includes earning a Bachelor’s degree with honors and a Master’s in Architecture between 1983 and 1985. He has spent the last five years as the permanent secretary in the Federal Ministry of Education, navigating challenges in the educational landscape.

His recent doctoral thesis focused on the selection processes within Nigerian universities, emphasizing the need for transparency and merit-based practices. Despite the controversies surrounding university governance, Echono remains committed to enhancing the quality of education in Nigeria, advocating for reforms that incorporate stakeholder engagement and accountability in decision-making processes.
