ECOWAS Takes Action on Migrant Issues in Libya

ECOWAS has initiated steps to address the challenges faced by West African migrants stranded in Libya. A mission led by Mr. Usman Obech, the head of delegation, evaluated the plight of these migrants and consulted with relevant authorities and agencies.

The mission highlighted the severe vulnerabilities and mistreatment that these migrants endure. It commended the International Organization for Migration (IOM) for its support in facilitating voluntary returns but noted that resources remain insufficient to cater to the high number of victims.

Mr. Obech emphasized the commitment of the ECOWAS Commission to protect the rights of its citizens abroad and called for collective action among member states to address migration challenges in the spirit of regional solidarity. The ECOWAS team also held consultations with Libyan authorities and IOM representatives during their visit, which included a field visit to a detention center in Tajoura, Tripoli, where migrants are detained.
