ECOWAS to Scrap Air Ticket Taxes in West Africa from 2026 to Cut Costs

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) will remove air ticket taxes in West Africa starting January 1, 2026, to address the exorbitant air travel costs in the region. Chri Appiah, the ECOWAS Director of Transport, announced the decision during a meeting in Abuja.

The move aims to align with international guidelines and promote seamless air connectivity to enhance trade and tourism. The high taxes have hindered the growth of airlines in West Africa, with carriers like Ethiopian Airlines and South African Airways facing challenges.
