Edo State Reports Lassa Fever Outbreak with 6 Deaths

The Edo State Government has officially declared a Lassa fever outbreak, with 29 confirmed cases and 6 reported deaths as of the weekend. Dr.

Oshiomhole announced the outbreak in Benin City, highlighting a notable increase in cases particularly in the Etsako West and Esan West Local Government Areas. The state has activated its Public Health Emergency Operations Centre (PHEOC) to manage the situation effectively.

Proactive measures have been implemented, including the donation of Lassa fever response packs to the Irua Specialist Teaching Hospital. Residents are urged to maintain proper food storage, keep their surroundings clean, avoid contact with rodent droppings, and report persistent symptoms such as fever, sore throat, bleeding, and weakness to the nearest hospital.

The Edo State Ministry of Health is conducting an epidemiological review and risk assessment to address the outbreak and prevent further cases.
