Plateau State Confirms Lassa Fever Outbreak with 11 Cases and Four Deaths

Plateau State in Nigeria has officially confirmed a Lassa fever outbreak, reporting 11 positive cases and four deaths across seven local government areas. The Commissioner of Health, Dr.

Nicholas Baamlong, disclosed this information during a press briefing in December 2025. The outbreak triggered an immediate response, including the activation of an incident management team and extensive contact tracing efforts.

As of December 2026, the state has recorded 28 suspect cases, with six confirmed cases in addition to the fatalities. The affected local government areas include Quanpan, Shendam, Wase, Langtang South, Jos North, and Mangu.

Health authorities are emphasizing public enlightenment to curb the disease's spread and ensure prompt medical attention for symptomatic individuals. Surveillance activities, rapid response teams, and the distribution of protective materials and treatment supplies are ongoing to contain the outbreak.
