Edo Deputy Speaker Links 15-Year Power Outage to Vandalism

Osamwonyi Atu, the Deputy Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, blamed cable thieves for a prolonged 15-year power outage affecting several communities in his constituency, particularly Abudu. Speaking in Benin City, he noted that despite ongoing efforts to restore electricity, repeated vandalism of electrical infrastructure has significantly delayed progress.

Atu mentioned that work to restore electricity to seven affected communities had already begun but faced major setbacks due to sabotage. He assured residents of his commitment to completing the electrification project by the end of his tenure, despite the challenges posed by vandalism.

Additionally, Henri Dafe, the head of the Benin Electricity Distribution Company, confirmed that the electrification project was at an advanced stage but had been hindered by the removal of materials such as copper wire and galvan pipe. Atu also highlighted various community development projects, including educational support and scholarships for students, reaffirming his dedication to improving welfare in the constituency.
