Edo Deputy Speaker Blames Cable Theft for Blackouts

Osamwonyi Atu, the Deputy Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, addressed the issue of persistent blackouts in his constituency, attributing the problem to cable theft and infrastructure vandalism. Speaking to journalists in Benin City, Atu emphasized that these challenges have hindered power supply for over 15 years.

He reassured constituents of his commitment to fulfilling campaign promises, despite facing constraints due to vandalism. Atu mentioned that the Benin Electricity Distribution Company, represented by Henri Dafe, has been working on projects that began in 2025 but have faced setbacks due to theft and vandalism of materials like copper wire and galvanised pipes.

He outlined various developmental projects, including the construction and renovation of schools, provision of boreholes, installation of solar street lights, and community halls, as well as educational support initiatives such as scholarships. Atu reaffirmed his dedication to improving living conditions in his constituency and ensuring that projects are verified and completed.
