Edo State Denies Interference in Traditional Ruler Appointments

The Edo State Commission, represented by Kassim Afegbua, issued a statement on Tuesday asserting that the state government, led by Governor Mondai Okpebholo, does not interfere in the appointment of traditional rulers. This response was prompted by accusations from a faceless group regarding financial improprieties linked to the current king of Okpella, Michael Sado, and claims of usurpation of the throne.

The commission emphasized that the process of electing the king was transparent and conducted according to existing chieftaincy laws, with Sado being validly elected by 16 out of 24 kingmakers on May 10, 2025. Afegbua condemned the allegations as frivolous and aimed at creating unnecessary distractions, reaffirming that the state government respects traditional matters and does not meddle in them.

He also noted that a recent court case challenging the king's election was dismissed due to lack of merit, further validating the election process.
