Edo Government Closes Schools Amid Kidnapping Threat

The Edo State Government has announced the immediate closure of three secondary schools in Akoko Edo Local Government Area following intelligence reports from the Department of State Services (DSS) indicating a credible threat of kidnapping targeting students. The schools affected are Ososo Grammar School, Ososo Comprehensive High School, and Makek Secondary School.

The decision, communicated through a circular signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Mr. Enodolomwanyi Otamer, is a precautionary security measure.

The DSS had intercepted communications from two suspected bandits planning to abduct schoolchildren in Edo North Senatorial District. A 25-year-old suspect was arrested on June 4 for allegedly conducting surveillance around Makek Secondary School.

The closure will remain in effect until further notice, while ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) candidates will be allowed to sit for their exams under strict security supervision. The government has urged parents and guardians to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies.
