Education Unions Reject TUC Suspension Over King's College

Unions under the Joint Workers Council of the Federal Ministry of Education have rejected the Trade Union Congress (TUC)'s suspension of industrial action, insisting on the reversal of the concession of King’s College, Lagos. Mr. Abraham Onuche, Chairman of the Joint Council, stated this during a protest at the ministry’s headquarters in Abuja.

The unions have been protesting for three days, claiming the concession arrangement is harmful to public education. Onuche criticized TUC for suspending an action it did not participate in and highlighted that the unions had formally requested a meeting with the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, on July 6, which had not yet occurred.

The unions demand dialogue before any final decisions are made regarding the concession, which they believe could negatively impact teachers and students, particularly those from less privileged backgrounds. Mr. Chigozie Ngadi, Chairman of the ASCSN, emphasized the protest's aim to protect access to quality education.

The dispute arose from the Federal Government's decision to concession King’s College.
