Education Workers Suspend Resumption Over King's College Concession

The Joint Congress of Unions of the Federal has announced the indefinite suspension of the First Term academic session across all Federal Unity Colleges in Nigeria, in response to the reported 35-year concession of King's College, Lagos, to the King's College Old Boys Association (KCOBA). In a communiqué dated September 10, 2026, the unions directed that the resumption scheduled for September 12 should not proceed until further notice.

This directive affects over 100 Federal Unity Colleges, including Federal Government Boys' Colleges and Federal Government Girls' Colleges. The unions expressed their frustration over the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, who allegedly refused to meet with them for nearly a month.

They stated that this situation left them with no choice but to take a public stand for public education. The announcement followed a protest where workers condemned the outsourcing of the Ministry's activities and called for the minister's removal.

The Education Rights Campaign (ERC) also criticized the concession, urging the government to reverse the decision.
