EFCC Investigates Eight Suspected Oil Thieves in Rivers

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has commenced an investigation into eight suspected oil thieves in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. This follows their arrest by the Nigerian Navy's anti-crude oil theft team during a patrol on March 22, 2026.

The suspects were apprehended alongside two wooden boats that were reportedly carrying 44,000 liters of suspected illegally refined automotive gas oil. The operation was conducted based on intelligence reports regarding illegal activities in the area between March 21 and 22.

The naval team, which departed their base for routine operations at 01:15 hours, intercepted the boats after 15 hours of patrol. Lt.

Command J.J. Jerom confirmed the arrests and noted that the handover of the suspects to the EFCC was conducted according to established procedures for prosecuting maritime-related offenses.

Chioma Emerol, the EFCC's commissioner, praised the collaboration with the Navy in tackling economic crime and stated that further investigations would ensure that those found culpable are prosecuted.
