EFCC Detains Former Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai

Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has been detained by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) as part of an investigation into allegations of fraud and terror financing. Muyiwa Adekeye, a media aide, confirmed that El-Rufai was invited to cooperate with the EFCC.

The agency has filed three counts of charges against him, linked to financial improprieties during his tenure from 2015 to 2023. Protests occurred at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja, with supporters demonstrating in favor of El-Rufai.

The Kaduna State House of Assembly has indicted several aides from his administration for allegedly siphoning ₦4 billion in state resources. The House recommended that current Governor Uba Sani refer El-Rufai for investigation by anti-corruption agencies.

Additionally, the DSS has seized El-Rufai's passport to prevent him from fleeing to Egypt, as investigations into the 2019 abduction of critic Abubakar Idris (Dadiyata) have been reopened.
