El-Rufai Detained Amid Corruption Investigation in Nigeria

Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, the former governor of Kaduna State, is currently detained by the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) due to allegations of financial misconduct linked to his time in office from 2015 to 2023. His legal troubles began after the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) invited him for questioning upon his return from a medical trip to Egypt.

Although initially released after two days in custody, the situation escalated when the Department of State Services (DSS) expressed interest in allegations of illegal wiretapping of his phone conversations. El-Rufai's whereabouts became a topic of speculation until confirmed by the ICPC.

His lawyer raised concerns about the legality of security operations conducted without a court order. El-Rufai has reportedly refused to cooperate with the investigation unless formal charges are presented.

His case is viewed within a broader political context, especially given his influence in the APC and the recent political climate surrounding the 2023 elections.
