EFCC Presents Evidence Against Emefiele in Naira Case

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) tendered newspaper publications as evidence against former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Godwin Emefiele during his trial for alleged Naira redesign violations. The trial, which includes four counts of disobeying a direct law and causing public injury, is marked as CR 264/2024.

The allegations include disobeying provisions of the CBN Act by approving the printing of 375,520,000 pieces of N1,000 notes, totaling a cost of N11,052,068,062, without the strict approval of the CBN board and the President of Nigeria. Emefiele has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

During the proceedings, Rotimi Oyedepo, the prosecuting counsel, presented evidence, including copies of newspapers and certified receipts from the National Library of Nigeria. Defense counsel Olalekan Ojo did not object to the admission of the documents, and the case was adjourned until May 12.
