Egbetokun's Tenure as IGP: Achievements and Challenges

Kayode Egbetokun was appointed Inspector General of Police (IGP) of the Nigeria Police Force on June 19, 2023, by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Egbetokun, born on September 4, 1964, has a PhD in Security Studies and a robust background in law enforcement, having served as the Chief Security Officer for Lagos State from 1999 to 2005.

His tenure has been marked by significant achievements, including the establishment of a special intervention squad to combat armed robbery and kidnapping, and the creation of a national contact center for crime reporting. Egbetokun has successfully reduced crime rates, arrested and prosecuted numerous suspects, and rescued many kidnapping victims.

He has also initiated reforms to improve police morale and infrastructure, including the rehabilitation of police barracks and stations. Despite his effective leadership, there are concerns regarding the legality of his tenure extension, which is set to last until October 31, 2027, due to amendments in the Police Act.
