Kaduna Residents Struggle with N1M Ram Prices for Eid

In Kaduna, residents are expressing distress over the skyrocketing prices of rams ahead of the Eid-el-Kabir celebration, with costs reaching as high as N1 million for larger breeds. Medium-sized rams are selling between N200,000 and N450,000, while larger exotic breeds command prices from N700,000 to N1 million, depending on size and breed.

Civil servant Suleiman Aliyu lamented that his household cannot afford a ram this year, as prices have quadrupled, forcing families to consider alternatives like chickens. Trader Halima Sani noted that the price surge is making it impossible for ordinary workers to participate in the traditional sacrifice.

Livestock dealer Salisu Abdullahi attributed the price increase to transport costs and insecurity affecting supply from rural communities. The situation is exacerbated by rising fuel prices and economic hardship, leading to low patronage in livestock markets.

Residents are urging the government to address inflation and insecurity, warning that these issues are impacting religious and social life across the country.
