Muslims in Oyo Frustrated by Rising Ram Prices for Sallah

As the 2026 Eid el-Kabir celebration approaches, Muslims in Oyo are expressing frustration over the soaring prices of rams. Buyers and sellers unanimously describe the situation as worrisome, with many buyers lamenting their weak purchasing power.

Seller Mallam Abdullah Saleh noted that despite the high prices, people are still pushing to buy rams, primarily those who are salaried workers and have not received their salaries. Prices for rams vary significantly, with small rams selling for N70,000 to N80,000, medium-sized rams for N300,000 to N400,000, and larger rams priced between N500,000 and N2 million.

Malam Salisu Abass attributed the high costs to increased petrol prices affecting transport costs from the north. Additionally, Alhaji Afeez Adegok urged Muslims to consider rearing sheep, goats, and cows to mitigate the yearly inflation associated with Sallah.

A survey revealed that the cost of essential commodities has also fluctuated, with rice prices rising from N54,000 to N67,000.
