Ekiti Chief Judge Frees 57 Awaiting Trial Inmates, Emphasizes Law Ambassadorship

Ekiti State Chief Judge, Justice Lekan Ogunmoy, on Friday, freed 57 awaiting trial inmates during an official visit to the Federal Correction Centre in Ado Ekiti. Of the 57 inmates, six were granted bail, nine were released for lack of a case to answer, and 42 were released unconditionally due to health issues or minor offenses.

The decision came after a review of 518 cases comprising 511 male and seven female inmates. Justice Ogunmoy emphasized the importance of releasing inmates who can be good ambassadors of the law and thanked stakeholders, including the Nigerian Police Force, Ekiti State Command, and other legal entities, for their contributions.

The Comptroller of Corrections, Olufemi Okuseinde, was commended for maintaining a healthy and hygienic environment for the inmates. Justice Ogunmoy also noted the overcrowding in the facility and urged for improvements in the custodial facilities.

He called on the State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Dayo Apata SAN, to provide better facilities for proper classification of inmates to enhance sentencing plans and rehabilitation efforts.
