Adesanya Challenges Gender Bias in EKSU Inaugural Lecture

During the 104th inaugural lecture at Ekiti State University, Professor Ibiyinka Adesanya addressed the entrenched religious and cultural biases against women. She argued that historical narratives have diminished women's status within religious and social structures, emphasizing that women should not be viewed as secondary figures but as equal partners in human existence.

Adesanya criticized the misinterpretation of biblical texts that justify gender inequities, specifically referencing passages from 1 Corinthians 14:34-35 and Genesis 2:18. She clarified that the term "weaker vessel" in 1 Peter 3:7 should not be misconstrued as implying inferiority but rather as a call for mutual respect.

Adesanya highlighted the prevalence of gender-based violence as a serious human rights concern and urged religious institutions to adopt inclusive interpretations of doctrine to promote justice and fairness. Vice Chancellor Professor Joseph Ayodele commended her scholarship, noting the impact of her lecture on intellectual enrichment in Ekiti.
