Elders Warn of Declining Nupe Language in Kaduna State

Elders in Kaduna State have raised alarms regarding the gradual decline in the use of the Nupe language, warning that failure to pass it on to younger generations could lead to its extinction. This concern was voiced during a post-Ramadan Sallah gathering held in Rigasa, Igabi Local Government Area, where community leaders, scholars, and stakeholders convened to discuss cultural preservation.

Alhaji Sidi Aliyu Yahaya, the chairman of the Nupe Foundation for Peace and Unity, emphasized that the language is foundational to their identity and urged parents to prioritize teaching their children the Nupe language to prevent cultural erosion. He noted that many Nupe families residing in Kaduna must make deliberate efforts to sustain their heritage within their communities.

Yahaya also highlighted the need for peace and coexistence among various ethnic and religious groups, reminding members of the Nupe community of their longstanding reputation for peace. Sheikh Muhammad Sallah commended the community's efforts in balancing Islamic and Western education while cautioning individuals about the importance of translating collective progress into personal success.
