Fashola Urges Acceptance of Election Outcomes in Nigeria

Babatunde Fashola, former Governor of Lagos State and ex-Minister of Power, urged Nigerian opposition parties to accept electoral outcomes, acknowledging that elections are inherently imperfect. Speaking at a public policy forum in Lagos, he emphasized the need to focus on strengthening democratic institutions rather than disputing electoral results.

Fashola noted that conducting nationwide elections, particularly presidential elections, involves extensive logistical operations across the country, which can create challenges. He pointed out that no electoral body can entirely eliminate imperfections in elections, as thousands of polling units operate under varying conditions.

Fashola argued that electoral shortcomings are not unique to Nigeria, as even long-established democracies face similar challenges. He expressed concern over the growing tendency among political actors to reject electoral results, warning that such attitudes could hinder democratic growth and stability.

Fashola stressed the vital role of opposition parties in contributing to national development, regardless of electoral outcomes, and urged citizens and political leaders to engage in broader discussions about democratic values and governance.
