INEC and ECONEC Establish AI Guidelines for Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the ECOWAS Network of Electoral Commissions (ECONEC) have adopted guidelines on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in electoral processes. This initiative aims to strengthen electoral integrity and prepare West African democracies for the influence of emerging technologies ahead of Nigeria’s general elections.
The guidelines were validated during a two-day meeting in Nigeria, attended by electoral officials and IT experts from the sub-region. This meeting followed the establishment of a working group at the ECONEC symposium in Dakar, Senegal, in November 2025.
Mr Serigne Ka, the Permanent Secretary and Head of the ECOWAS Electoral Assistance Division, stated that the guidelines were developed in response to AI's increasing role in election management. INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, emphasized the importance of regional cooperation in strengthening electoral institutions and preparing for the 2027 general elections, highlighting ongoing preparations such as ensuring a credible voter register and training personnel.
