CSOs Demand Timetable for 2027 Elections from INEC

Civil society organizations (CSOs), including the Central Media Society (CEMESO), Kukah Centre, International Press Centre, Nigerian Women Trust Fund, TAF Africa, and Yiaga Africa, have called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to urgently issue a revised timetable for the 2027 general elections. This demand follows the signing of the Electoral Act 2026 by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

During a press conference in Abuja, Jake Epel, CEO of TAF Africa, highlighted that the 2026 Electoral Act has significant gaps and flaws that could undermine electoral integrity and create barriers to participation. The CSOs emphasized the need for transparency and compliance with constitutional guarantees for equal participation.

They also pointed out that the act allows for voter card downloads from INEC's website, which could enhance voter participation. The organizations stressed the importance of a clear electoral timeline for political parties, candidates, and security agencies to prepare adequately for the elections.
