CHRICED Criticizes Tinubu for Electoral Act Amendment

CHRICED, led by Executive Director Dr. Ibrahim M. Zikirullahi, condemned President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the National Assembly for the rapid signing of the Electoral Act amendment, which was executed in less than 24 hours.

The amendment allows for manual transmission of election results in cases of network challenges, which CHRICED views as a significant setback for electoral transparency and public confidence in Nigeria's electoral process. The organization argues that mandatory electronic transmission of results is essential to prevent manipulation and political interference.

Despite claims of inadequate network capacity, CHRICED noted that major telecom operators in Nigeria have the infrastructure to support real-time transmission. They criticized the reliance on manual processes, especially given the substantial investment of 300 billion naira in electoral technology.

CHRICED urged citizens to hold lawmakers accountable, particularly highlighting the 55 Senate votes against mandatory electronic transmission, which they believe undermines democratic participation and electoral integrity.
