Nigerian Bar Association Demands Mandatory Electronic Transmission of Election Results in Electoral Act

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) is urging the National Assembly to pass proposed amendments to the Electoral Act that would mandate the electronic transmission of election results. The NBA's President, Afam Osigwe, emphasized the importance of this amendment to enhance transparency and public trust in elections.

The NBA's National Executive Council met in Maiduguri, Borno State, on February 5, 2026, to adopt a report highlighting the urgent need for mandatory electronic transmission of results to strengthen electoral transparency. The NBA expressed concerns about the Senate's decision to retain the current wording in the Electoral Act, which they believe could compromise the integrity of the electoral process.

The Senate President, Godswil Akpabio, refuted claims that the requirement for electronic transmission had been removed, stating that the 2022 Electoral Act still mandates the President's office to transmit results electronically.
