House of Reps Walk Out Over Electoral Act Amendment

On a Tuesday, members of the House of Representatives in Nigeria staged a walkout as a protest against efforts to reverse the passage of the Electoral Act amendment bill. This bill, which was passed in December of the previous year, includes a clause that mandates the compulsory electronic transmission of election results.

The trouble began when Franci Waive, the chairman of the House Committee on Rules and Business, moved a motion to reverse the House's decision on the bill. Speaker Tajudeen Abba called for a voice vote, which resulted in a loud "nay" from the members, triggering the protest.

Following this, the House went into an executive session, but upon returning, members stood in protest to prevent Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu from continuing the proceedings. Aggrieved members ultimately walked out of the plenary session, continuing their protest against the controversial clause in the bill.
