House of Reps Members Walk Out Over Electoral Bill Protest

Members of the House of Representatives in Nigeria staged a walkout as protests continued over a motion to rescind the passage of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill, which was initially passed on December 23, 2025. The trouble began when Franci Waiv, the Chairman of the House Committee on Rules and Business, moved a motion to reverse the decision regarding the bill.

Speaker Tajudeen Abba put the motion to a voice vote, which resulted in a louder "aye" from the opposition, triggering protests among lawmakers. Following the unrest, Abba called for an executive session, but the issue remained unresolved, leading to a rowdy session.

The aggrieved members protested against Clause 60(3) of the bill, which deals with the compulsory electronic transmission of results. Despite the chaos, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu attempted to continue proceedings, but the protesting members walked out of the plenary session.
