Southern Chile Declares Emergency Amid Deadly Wildfires

A state of emergency has been declared in Southern Chile as wildfires have turned the region into an inferno, resulting in at least 15 deaths and the evacuation of 50,000 people. The fires began spreading aggressively over the past two days, fueled by strong winds and intense summer heat, with nearly two dozen separate blazes reported across the country.

The worst damage occurred in the Nubl Biobio region, approximately 500 kilometers south of the capital, Santiago. Security Minister Lui Cordero confirmed the death toll on Sunday, noting that entire neighborhoods in cities like Penco and Lirquen were emptied almost overnight.

President Gabriel Boric has mobilized resources and the armed forces to respond to the crisis. Interior Minister Alvaro Elizald emphasized the seriousness of the situation, as the fires have become a regular threat in Chile, raising concerns about land management and climate pressures.
