#EndSARS Protester Released After Six Years in Detention

Rashe Wasiu, a participant in the 2020 #EndSARS protests against police brutality, regained his freedom on March 4, 2023, after nearly six years of detention. His release followed a ruling by a Lagos court that struck his case.

The Lagos State Advocacy Group announced this development, describing it as a significant breakthrough in their sustained campaign for the release of individuals arrested in connection with the protests. The #EndSARS protests, which began in October 2020, involved nationwide demonstrations led by youth against police brutality, particularly targeting the disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

The group emphasized the importance of public pressure and legal intervention in achieving this outcome. They also paid tribute to the late human rights lawyer Adeshina Ogunlana, who played a pivotal role in the pursuit of justice for detainees.

The advocacy group remains committed to fighting for justice until all victims of injustice are fully realized.
