Akwa Ibom's Sports Revolution Under Governor Umo Eno

Paul Bassei, the Commissioner for Sports in Akwa Ibom State, commended Governor Umo Eno for initiating a sports revolution by establishing a standalone Ministry of Sports. This strategic reform aims to provide clarity in administration and effectively implement the state's sports agenda.

Bassei highlighted the state's improved performance in the Niger Delta Games, where Akwa Ibom finished sixth and secured fourth place in the latest edition held in Edo State, with 75 percent of athletes being indigenous students. The administration is committed to grassroots sports development, shifting from a football-centric approach to a broader multi-sport strategy.

Bassei noted the potential of cricket, baseball, and swimming, identifying swimming as a promising area for future success. He emphasized the need for improved sports infrastructure in public schools and collaboration with the Ministry of Education to address these gaps.

The ministry is also working on a comprehensive athlete database to track and nurture talent, ensuring sustainable development in Akwa Ibom's sports sector.
