Enugu Air and Airport Concession to Boost Economy

Chidieber Onyia, the Secretary to the Government of Enugu State, disclosed that the establishment of Enugu Air and the concession of Akanu Ibiam International Airport are key components of the state’s strategy to grow its economy from $4.4 billion to $30 billion by 2031. This initiative is expected to boost tourism, attract investments, and enhance agricultural exports, positioning Enugu as an economic hub in the Southeast.

The government, led by Governor Peter Mbah, aims to develop projects around anticipated visitor traffic, expecting three to five million visitors annually. The Enugu Air concept will reduce dependence on commercial airlines by operating its own schedule.

The airport's infrastructure will also support agricultural development through cargo operations. The government plans to adopt a private sector-led approach to aviation, ensuring efficiency and sustainability.

Onyia provided an update on the airport concession process, revealing a timeline for the next phase of activities set for October, with milestones to be achieved quarterly.
