Enugu State Local Government Election Sees Low Turnout

The Enugu State Local Government Election, conducted by the Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission across 17 local government areas, experienced low voter turnout on Saturday. Residents cited inadequate awareness and negative past election experiences as reasons for their apathy.

Reports indicated that electoral materials arrived late at several polling units, including Achara Layout and Awkunanaw, causing delays. In Trans-Ekulu and parts of New Haven, only a few voters participated.

Some residents, like Raphael Nnamani and Margaret Ozioko, expressed their disillusionment, stating they believed their votes would not count. Peter Eze highlighted concerns about the relevance of local government elections, while Fabian Ugwu referred to the process as an “affirmation of selected candidates.” Despite campaigns urging participation, the turnout remained low, prompting calls for political leaders and electoral authorities to enhance citizen engagement in future elections.

Results were expected to be announced later as collation continued across 260 electoral wards.
