Low Voter Turnout in Anambra LG Elections Amid Apathy

On Saturday, the Anambra State local government elections took place, but voter turnout was notably low, with many citizens shunning the process. The elections began around 8:20 am, but there were reports of voter apathy, late arrival of voting materials, and confusion at polling units.

Major opposition parties, including the All Progressives Congress (APC), African Democratic Congress (ADC), and Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), opted not to participate, leaving the ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) to run unopposed in 20 councils. The Young Progressives Party (YPP) was the only party to field a candidate, specifically in Anambra East LGA.

Reports indicated a heavy security presence to maintain order, but there were incidents of violence, including gunshots in Otuocha over election material distribution. The YPP alleged manipulation of the election process by the state government, claiming their supporters faced intimidation.

The Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC) was accused of lacking independence in the electoral process.
