Enugu Achieves Zero Cholera Cases Amid Nationwide Surge

The Enugu state government, led by Governor Peter Mbah, has achieved a significant public health milestone by recording zero cases of cholera in 2023. This achievement is notable as Nigeria has reported more than 65,000 suspected cholera cases across 35 other states.

Dr Jide Idris, the Director-General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), commended Enugu for being the only state without a reported cholera case, attributing this success to the proactive measures implemented by the state government. He dismissed any claims of concealed cases, asserting that the government is “seriously proactive.” Dr Idris described the Enugu government as “serious-minded” and “active in doing the needful.” He highlighted the significance of this achievement, particularly as cholera is an all-year-round disease that typically peaks during the rainy season, increasing the risk of transmission through contaminated water and poor sanitation.

This accomplishment reflects the Mbah administration's focus on preventive healthcare, public health systems, sanitation, surveillance, and accessible healthcare infrastructure.
