Akwa Ibom State Reports Zero Cholera Cases in 2026

Akwa Ibom State has recorded zero confirmed cholera outbreaks in 2026, a notable improvement from the over 35 outbreaks in 2025, as stated by the Commissioner for Health, Dr Ekem Emmanuel John. This achievement is attributed to increased government funding, strengthened disease surveillance, training of health personnel, and support from development partners.

During the August edition of the Akwa Ibom State Government’s monthly Ministerial Briefing in Uyo, John outlined the administration's health sector interventions, emphasizing that the success is a result of strategic funding and support. He noted that 713 primary healthcare workers were trained in data usage for decision-making, while 1,959 received training in family planning services.

Additionally, 600 nurses benefited from professional development, and over 530 personnel were trained on the Drug Revolving Fund operations. The government is also constructing model primary healthcare centres across the state, with 19 completed and more expected to be commissioned in September, alongside renovations of 29 existing centres.
