Enugu Retirees Demand N32,000 Minimum Pension from Mbah

The Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) Enugu State council called on Governor Peter Mbah to implement a pension review that would set the minimum pension at N32,000, in line with the new national minimum wage. The union highlighted that some pensioners currently receive as little as N447 monthly, emphasizing that the new adjustment would ensure no retiree earns below N32,000.

This appeal followed the completion of local government branch elections in Enugu South local government area. Despite the request, the pensioners commended Governor Mbah for restoring regular pension payments and clearing significant arrears owed to state retirees.

Comrade Ikechukwu Ekere, the state chairman of NUP, noted that under Mbah's administration, pension administration has improved, particularly for retired primary school teachers and local government workers, who previously faced up to 27 months of unpaid pensions. Since July 2024, these pensioners have received their pensions timely, and those in state parastatals have enjoyed regular payments since January 2025.
