Eric Chelle's Contract Sparks NFF Scrutiny Again

The saga surrounding Eric Chelle, the head coach of Nigeria's Super Eagles, has brought renewed scrutiny to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) regarding its management of foreign coaches. Chelle, who was appointed in January 2025 on a two-year contract, is expected to complete his current contract, which has nine months remaining.

His tenure has been marked by challenges, including Nigeria's failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a loss to DR Congo in the African playoff. Despite leading Nigeria to a third-place finish at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, criticism has emerged over the NFF's decision to retain him for the final year of his contract.

Recent leaks have revealed a 19-point proposal attributed to Chelle, which includes demands for a monthly salary of $130,000, a private SUV, dedicated security, and a fully furnished office. NFF Secretary General Moham Sanusi has downplayed these claims, stating that the federation has not confirmed whether formal negotiations will take place.
