EU Sanctions Target Israeli Settlers and Hamas Leaders

The European Union (EU) has reached a consensus to impose sanctions on Israeli West Bank settlers and leaders of Hamas, as announced during a meeting of member state foreign ministers. This decision comes after a prolonged deadlock attributed to Hungary's former Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who had previously blocked the sanctions.

The package targets three Israeli settlers and four settler organizations, although their identities have not been publicly disclosed. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas emphasized the need for action against extreme violence.

Following the appointment of new Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar, the veto was quickly lifted. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot welcomed this development, stating that the sanctions are aimed at those guilty of supporting extremist violence in the West Bank.

Israel condemned the measures, asserting its right to settle in the West Bank, while Hamas leaders were also sanctioned in response to their involvement in attacks that resulted in approximately 1,200 deaths during the October 7, 2023, assault on southern Israel.
